Borrower's Agreement
-
Valid Allison Library card must be presented in order to borrow library materials.
-
Borrowers are responsible for all the materials borrowed on their cards and for any charges on items that are overdue, lost or damaged. $5.00 replacement charge for lost cards.
-
Borrowers should note the time and date that material is due. Renewal reminders and overdue notices are sent as a courtesy. Failure to receive notification does not relieve the borrower of the obligation to return materials when they are due or justify a reduction in fines.
-
Borrowers who are away from Vancouver are still responsible for ensuring materials are returned on or before the due date even if the due date has been changed/shortened when another user places a hold on an item.
Fines and other charges must be paid in full before Library privileges will be issued or renewed.
Loan Periods
Loan periods vary according to the type of material you borrow and your borrower status (see table below). Borrowers are responsible for returning items on time and in good condition. The due date for materials can be checked online and is the date by which items must be returned or renewed. An email notice will be sent prior to an item’s due date if you have provided the library with a current email address.
NOTE: Some items may be recalled before the due date if they are needed for course reserves. You will be notified of the recall by email or telephone.
Loans of 1 day or longer are due at closing time of the circulation desk on the due date. Two-hour loans are due on the date/time noted. Loan periods are as follows:

Renewing Your Loans
A limit of 3 renewal periods has been set in order to minimize the number of lost items. After your third renewal all items must be returned by the due date. You are welcome to re-check those items you would like to continue using, but we require all items to be returned by the final date displayed through ‘My Library Record.’
To renew materials:
-
Go to 'My Library Record' from the Allison library catalogue.
-
Log in with your last name and first name; then type in the full number on your library card (beginning with 05221...) and click 'Submit'.
-
Click on the hyper-linked text that indicates how many items you currently have checked out (e.g. "7 items currently checked out").
-
Check the box beside the item(s) you wish to renew.
-
Click the "Renew Selected" button at the top of the list
A message stating "Too soon to renew" is displayed if you try to renew items with more than 7 days remaining until the due date (for regular loans). This is to prevent a borrower from inadvertently renewing too soon and thus using the 3-renewal limit too quickly.
Email Notification
It is important to provide an up-to-date email address for automatic notices to be sent to you. The email address you provide will be used to notify you of:
-
Courtesy reminders of items due in 3 days (except for short loans/ course reserves)
-
Loans that are overdue or have been recalled/ requested by other borrowers
-
Requests you have placed that can be picked up
-
Fines or other charges that you owe
Please note, however, that failure to recieve courtesy reminders from RCL will not excuse borrowers from late charges.
Fines and Charges
Overdue charges are levied as follows:
-
$.50 per item per day for items from the general stacks
-
$1.00 per item per day for reserve materials or for materials which have been recalled by another user
The system will automatically block an account that has any outstanding fines or charges, or for Regent / Carey students with unpaid fines of $10.00 or more.
Lost or Damaged Materials
Replacement charges will be assessed for reasons such as lost or broken materials, highlighting in or otherwise defacing books, water damage, or failure to return materials. Charges usually amount to a replacement cost of $50.00 for a book (higher for more valuable items) plus a $25.00 processing fee.
